Total nonfarm employment decreased by 190,000 between September and October. The annualized rate of job declines improved to -4.0 percent in October from -4.3 percent in September. Losses continue to be large in manufacturing and construction, but the monthly declines are not as pronounced as they were earlier in the year. In contrast healthcare employment continues to rise; the sector has added nearly 600,000 jobs since the start of the recession.
